From shelf-stacker to chief executive, Andy discusses his retail career

As far as career paths go, Andy’s journey from shelf-stacker to chief executive of Asda is a fair climb of the ladder, and one which has helped mould the UK grocery sector as we know it today.

In a wide-ranging interview with Retail Gazette, Andy talks about how his career in retail started at the age of 17 – with just one O-Level to his name – stacking shelves at Fine Fare.

Within a couple of years he was managing his own department and “thoroughly enjoying the retail industry”, and after positions at Morrisons, Asda, Matalan and Iceland he returned to Asda to become chief operating officer and then chief executive in 2010.

Andy tells Retail Gazette about the pride he has in his tenure at Asda during a challenging economic backdrop, discusses the proposed merger between his former employer and Sainsburys and looks ahead to how he can pass on his knowledge as he embarks on the next stage of his career as a business consultant to a portfolio of companies.
